Know Your Hydroponic Grow Light as Well as Your Plants
Hydroponic growing systems make it very convenient to grow plants indoors all year long. Since there is no set growing season, when you are growing plants indoors climate is not an issue either, and that means that You Can grow whatever type of plant you wish as long as you keep the temperature and lighting correct for the species you are growing. Earlier hydroponic systems made use of florescent light bulbs that were available at the time, but those are not sufficient for today's hydroponic systems. The intensity of light is called foot-candle when speaking of florescent light bulbs, but today that power is known and lumen. Indoor plants need somewhere around 2000 lm per square foot.
Now we come to light spectrum. While we often do not think of life as having color, it is made up of many different colors. Plants require light from the green and two wavelengths in order to grow. Red and orange light is needed during the flowering and budding stages. Photosynthesis is plants transformed nutrients into energy and wavelength that is needed for that is 400 to 700 nanometers.
High intensity discharge lights produce high lumen per watt and light that is closer to what you would find from the sun during the summertime. This makes them ideal for use as hydroponic grow light. A hydroponic lamp using metal halide will help to produce a much stronger plant growth due to its blue spectrum light, but high pressure sodium lamps produce the red spectrum light, which induces budding flower production and fruiting.
Since florescent lamps produce less lumen, than an HID lamp, they are not recommended for the purposes of hydroponic grow light. Of course they will work well for plant growth that does not require the high intensity lighting, such as herbs and seedlings. LED lighting, such as that being used on the space station for its hydroponic garden, is advantageous when it comes to hydroponic systems. These bulbs are intended to last for many years and can be adjusted as needed for the type of light spectrum required for plant growth. However, they are more expensive.
When you are setting up your hydroponic grow light system, be sure not to set it to close to cause burning of the plants, but close enough to provide the type of lighting needed for optimal growth. Light shades should be used to focus the light correctly, and reflective materials should also be placed on the walls and other surfaces to prevent the waste of light by it being absorbed by these surfaces.
The best way to use a hydroponic grow light is to know your plants and know your lights, and this will allow you to better judge the hydroponic light you are using.
