Shopping for a Hand Held Metal Detector for a Boys Weekend
We have a pretty close-knit family, gathering together for barbecues a few times a month and just randomly stopping by each other's homes. But it's pretty casual, which is good. We're just comfortable with each other. Still, I decided that it was high time for a boys' weekend getaway.
There's a nice fishing lake with some basic cabins near my home. I worked out a weekend that everyone was available—both my sons and three grandsons. The reservations were booked and put on my cruise director cap to plan some fun activities. Here was my itinerary:
Friday night: Getting there and setting up camp. Sure, we had cabins, but boys will be boys and I knew there would be some tent pitching too. After we got all the logistics worked out, it would be time to start the campfire. We would have grilled steaks and foil potatoes for dinner, followed by a few beers (or root beers for the underage crew). There's nothing like sitting around a campfire with the men to draw out your inner caveman.
Saturday morning: Fishing. And that could last for an hour or five, depending on the success. I had two john boats on reserve, which is just the perfect setup for a friendly tournament—nothing says boys' weekend like some friendly competition.
Saturday afternoon: Time for a little exploring. My sons and I each have our own hand held metal detector. I bought three more Fisher metal detectors as a surprise for the grandsons. This is really my thing and fortunately my sons really enjoy it too. I was looking forward to trolling the lake property to see what we could find. I could count on two things: 1-whether we found anything or not, it's wonderful to just hike around outside with family, and 2-there'd inevitably be some form of competition, like who found the first coin or who found the most…you get the idea.
Saturday Evening: Another campfire night, and I even got the goods for s'mores.
Sunday morning: This is pretty much up in the air. There's a lot of just breaking camp and heading home, but we usually manage to get in a little bit of fishing or pull out the hand held metal detector again.
So, it was a good, yet loose schedule. This trip is about the guys getting together and just doing some guy things. In a few years, I think we may do something even more adventurous, maybe a week in Canada or something equally as rugged.
