E-Voting in a UK Context
Biometric methods in e-voting involve the use of various human biological features by the voters with a computerized machine to authenticate or identify the voters. Basically, bio-metric voting is meant to eliminate any use of Personal Identification Numbers or passwords. In this case, there are various Biometric methods to be used in UK e-voting in order to eliminate any unnecessary inconveniences by saving time and money. As it has been revealed, the two main bio-metric methods suitable in UK e-voting system are the use of biometric detectors for fingerprints and iris (Anderson 2007).
In the method where there is use of fingerprints, the voting process involves the use of specialized fingerprint detectors. More specifically, each voter's fingerprints are priory taken and fed into the voting machine. On the process of voting, the machine identifies the voter's fingerprints and then authenticates him/her to vote. In this case, each voter's fingerprints are recorded together with his/her details in order to enable the machine to authenticate the voter easily (Evens 2003). It is important to note that, the use of fingerprints in biometric voting enhances saving of both time and resources since each voter is easily identified by the machine and authentication occurs for his/her voting. Generally, e-voting using fingerprints is useful in the sense that, they enhance time saving to a great extent and are usable in the way they are easy to enhance authentification of the voters (Evens 2003).
In the case of biometric detector for iris, the voters' irises are initially identified by a special machine capable of differentiating irises of one person from the ones of another. In this case, each voter goes near the detector machine for the irises in order to be identified before being authenticated for voting (Anderson 2007). It should thus be noted that, the use of iris detector machines in e-voting would be efficient as it would enhance time and resource saving. Basically, use of iris in e-voting is highly usable in the sense that, the reduce congestions in voting center as well as helping in reducing chances of any physical alterations of the vote results.
As it has been revealed, the biometric system of e-voting is vulnerable to various attacks and interventions. One of the most commonly revealed interventions in biometric systems is spoofing attacks. Spoofing is an intentional trail to impose a falseful acceptance on to the entire biometric voting system. This kind of an attack has been susceptible to most of the methods employed in biometric system like fingerprints, iris, sound and face detectors among others (Aladwani 2001).
Basically, finger-print readers are susceptible to spoofing; where the outcome of the voting may be willfully imposed to accept or reject votes. Basically, scoffing in this method is usually very possible since the models applied to trick the ‘life-check' of the fingerprint readers. This has been enhanced by the fact that, the fingerprints are photographed using software for graphics in which the photos are later-on layered using special acids. Generally, finger prints are very susceptible to spoofing since any dominant party over the voting may try to interfere with the voting results (Anderson 2007).
More so, iris detector machines are also susceptible to spoofing since the machines used to take the special features of each voter's iris may be willfully interfered with, altering the actual outcomes of the voting. It should thus be noted that, any e-voting should be properly monitored by a wider network of detectives in order to prevent spoofing. By so doing, the voting in UK using biometric methods would achieve efficiency to a greater extent; as there would be limited wastage of both time and money. Generally, spoofing attacks in the voting system can be great threat since there would be inaccuracy and cheating in the ultimate voting outcomes (Evens 2003).
Question 1 (b)
As it has been revealed, e-voting through bio-metrics has acquired a lot of public support in UK and also other countries like the US and Switzerland among others. Basically, there have been various motivating factors behind the adoption of e-voting systems in which many citizens among various countries have been supporting the system greatly. For instance, there have been lower costs involved in the voting processes in terms of both money and time. More specifically, low time wastage and limited use of resources have been enhanced; thus the system has acquired a lot of public support (Aladwani 2001). More so, higher voter participation has also been another important motivation behind the acquirement of e-voting using bio-metrics. More People Have been interested in the act where each of them has been personally eager to make his/her vote as confidential as possible (Singer, et al 2004).
The e-voting piloting in UK, for instance, acquired a lot of public support where the citizens say it would alleviate most of the evils associated with politics like corruption and manual interferences of votes. As it was revealed, many people in UK advocated for the adoption of the system since it would enhance ease involvement of the blind in voting with less complications. By so doing, the e-voting through bio-metric system has been found to acquire a lot of public support in UK and other developed countries where the system has already been piloted like Switzerland and Germany (Anderson 2007).
